Let The Chips Fall Where They May

Do you ever wonder about colloquialisms we use but don't even think about as to where they originated? One of them that came up this week, due to interactions with persons that did not go well, was "having a chip on your shoulder."
There was a time when people would literally place a chip of wood on their shoulder. It was to show others that they actively were looking for a fight over some issue that already had "splintered" their ability to relate peaceably. They dared others to knock the chip off their should. Anyone who wanted to accept the proposed challenge could do so, and a fight would occur afterwards.
How silly! We would say. Yet -
This easily happens, especially on social media, where we really do not know one another, have no access to seeing the other's body language, or tone of voice, and so forth. Some wear the "chip" that happens to be dearly held convictions or beliefs. The posture is always defensive. When another view is expressed, it is taken as a challenge and a chance to argue. The chip gets sent flying. The conflict follows. Everybody gets triggered.
We live in a world where everyone is on the offensive. Some simply live in that space as zealots. They don't even realize it, but spend most of their time looking for an argument. Even this post may be interpreted as a chip for someone to knock off. It is not that. I simply address how chips on the shoulder "look" these days. They are chips of dearly held convictions, religious perspective and beliefs, ideologies, and the like.
It is a tragic commentary that many worry far more about somebody implanting a "chip" in them by covert means, than seeking to recognize and to remove the chip from their own shoulder.
"Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God." Matthew 5:9 NKJV
"Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord." Hebrews 12:14 NKJV
(Ouch! That last one is serious business.)
