Waking up from the Stupor and Subtlety of “Religianity” to the Holy Spirit.
A large part of life seems to consist of arising out of an anesthetized state wherein the world lies (and much of Christendom) in its fallenness. This is the result of the Primal Parents having partaken of the spiritual venom (temptation to be as gods) of the Serpent, the evil one of old. The “world” consists of the anesthetized, under the spell of darkness. Essentially, most have taken the blue pill. They drank the Kool Aid. There is need of spiritual and mental detoxification.
This Big Sleep, this stupor - to which all men are subject when born into the world - is the very thing from which our Lord Jesus, the Prince of Peace, desires to set us free. He means for us to be released from the Deceiver and the life of illusions and delusions - lies - which the evil one has spun around and into us. We are born full of his venom and in need of spiritual detoxification, resurrection, and remediation. Resurrection and regeneration by and in the Life of the Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life.
This process of being set free is an ongoing one, and there are points along the way where we do not seem to “be ourself.” That is probably because we have never actually known what it’s like to not be envenomated spiritually. We are born in this stupor. Waking up is hard to do.
There is an opening of the eyes (inwardly and spiritually) to see and perceive falsehood as it really is. Especially as it has been embraced and practiced in the religious systems for a very long time. What has been embraced and entrenched has been added gradually to the simplicity of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, that only pure stream which can deliver us from this poison and restore us to what our Creator intended us to be. These things are offered as the way of salvation, but actually are great barriers to it, enshrined and presented with so much subtlety. And with such fervor that wars and persecutions have resulted against those who refuse to bow down to them.
This is an age old problem, from the very beginning, continually interwoven also into the narrative of God’s people of the Old Covenant. They were constantly falling into the things that God, through His prophets, and as much of His word as they had then, warned them not to become involved.
Ezekiel 8 is a prime example. (Please take the time to read it now.)
Yet they made the pagan practices a part of their temple rites! A thing that greatly angers God. That sort of thing angered Him even at the time of the Golden Calf, while Moses was receiving the Commandments on Mount Sinai. Not because He likes being angry, but because it jeopardizes the eternal destination of His children’s souls, and makes His word and His story a lie before the world! He will not share His throne with other created objects of worship, whether the natural order or fashioned by men’s hands.
(See Romans 1. Very important.)
What the work was at that time was the performance of a “liturgical drama”, in a sense, a participatory one enacted daily by Israel, to foretell in ceremony, sacrifices, type, shadow, metaphor, and poetry... of the coming Messiah and His once for all atoning sacrifice to put to death sin and death and the power / authority of the devil, the father of lies. It was a pure “worship” shown to them by the Lord. It had its time and purpose under heaven.
This “shadow” was to speak of, herald, and to give way to the reality of Emmanuel - not only God with us in Jesus Christ, but God Who would dwell in us through the Holy Spirit.
The types and shadows were essentially put to death in the reality of Christ and in the hearts of the first followers of Jesus, following Pentecost. The brightness of His coming by the Holy Spirit poured out on all, Jew and Gentile - following His passion, death, resurrection, and ascension - was evidenced by deliverance from demons, healings, and hearts being changed and freed from bondage to the works of Satan, sin and death, and self. For the Gospel implies the necessity of being saved from these powers of darkness to live in the light of freedom from them! We are to be saved from something and to be saved for God and His kingdom and purposes.
This means a life lived in the very Spirit of God, and to be taught of God. Jn 14:26 - “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He shall bring to remembrance all things that I said to you.”
Jn 16:13 - “However, when He, the Spirit of Truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; And He will tell you things to come.”
He teaches us all things.
He brings to remembrance all that Jesus has said.
He guides us into all truth.
He tells us of things to come.
Is it any wonder that the Apostles made sure that the new converts - some of whom had not even heard at first when they became Christians of the Holy Spirit - not only had to be more fully informed, but had to actually receive the Holy Spirit with signs following? This is the evidence of conversion, the real meaning of “confirmation”, as the Spirit confirmed that this person now belonged to Christ and had received His Spirit. It was not just a ceremony! It was a living reality and experience, to be seen by all.
The question is, where is this today? We have lots of venom offered as salvation, and billions drinking it! But where is the truth backed up by evidence of signs following, and in particular, greatly changed lives, loving Jesus and loved by Jesus and filled with His presence and power?
(And then there is the subject for another day of false signs and wonders so as to lead astray if possible the elect!)
See Jn 16:7-12. Jesus as both Son of God and Son of Man was Himself filled with and walking in the Holy Spirit. Yet He says in verse 7, “... it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.”
He was one person, and an unique one indeed. Yet many “peculiar people” were/are needed who are re-created in His likeness!
It could be said that this was supposed to result in many like Him! And it did, but other venom was again introduced. As the Spirit was promised to be poured out on all flesh. Jn 14:12 - “Most assuredly, I say to you, He who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also, and greater works than these will he do, because I go to the Father.”
Consider also Jn 1:12-16. “But as many as RECEIVED HIM, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name; who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God... And of His fullness we HAVE all RECEIVED, and grace upon grace.”
May the everlasting presence and power of His Holy Spirit be with all who truly seek Him, who continue to ask, seek, and knock - according to the promise of the Father, who will never deceive!
Mark 16:15-20. “... and these signs will follow those who believe ; in My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and it they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover... And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen.”
See also Luke 11:9-13. (It is important to read this now.) This is how we are to be “de-venom-ized” and delivered, through life long walking in the Holy Spirit, not after the deeds of the flesh trying to save itself through false ideas and practices. Surrender of self and life in the Holy Spirit, not struggle in the flesh, is the modus operandi of receptivity by grace through faith. It is not passive! It is receptive!
May this Spirit of Truth once more resurrect those asleep under the venom of the Serpent and his slaves arrayed against the Spirit born and led children of God in Christ Jesus!
Ephesians 6:10-18 encapsulates this warfare:
“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.”
Soli Deo Gloria! Amen!
